An especially robust Lavandula x intermedia selection, ‘Phenomenal’ is extremely tolerant of both high and low temperatures, humidity, and poor soil. A low maintenance, evergreen shrub that forms a rounded mound of fragrant grey-green foliage, 2 to 3 feet wide and tall. Blooms summer into fall with long wands of bright lavender purple flowers that attract a myriad of pollinators, particularly bees. Useful as a low hedge and striking when planted in masses. Be sure to shear on occasion to encourage blooming, and prune once a year in late summer or early fall to maintain compact form. Plant in full sun to part shade inland. Performs best in less fertile, sharply-draining soil. Water occasionally to infrequently once established. Can be difficult to establish and can be short-lived in hotter inland areas.
