Ceanothus

Ceanothus, commonly known as California Wild Lilac, can be found in many different plant communities throughout California. They are grown in landscape settings primarily for their prolific blooms, which begin as early as January and continue through April. Flower colors cover the spectrum from white to dark purple, with most being shades of light to dark blue. Mature specimens vary in size and form: some groundcovers will only grow to 6 inches high, while large shrubs can reach 20 feet in height. Ceanothus species are fast growing and do best with good drainage and low amounts of water. Once the plant is established little or no supplemental water is required for many species and cultivars.

REQUIREMENTS: Zones 1-9, 14-24. Full sun to part shade. Once established, apply deep infrequent irrigation in the dry season. True species should not require any irrigation once established.

Because of the demand for the features this species brings to the landscape, horticulturists have spawned an almost boggling array of hybrids and selections in a wide range of colors, forms, and sizes as well as culture. To help sort through the genera's vast variables, please see our Guide to Ceanothus (Wild Lilac)
