Tulbaghia violacea is an evergreen, clump-forming perennial native to South Africa and widely grown for its extended bloom season, drought tolerance, and adaptability to a broad range of landscape conditions. Commonly known as society garlic, it has become one of the most widely used flowering perennials in Southern California because it provides reliable color with minimal maintenance and performs under irrigation regimes ranging from infrequent to regular.
Habit & Size: Forms dense clumps of narrow, gray-green, grass-like foliage approximately 12–18 inches tall and wide. The foliage emits a garlic-like fragrance when crushed. From spring through fall, and often nearly year-round in mild climates, plants produce clusters of lavender-purple flowers held above the foliage on slender stems reaching 18–24 inches tall. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Cultural Requirements: Performs best in full sun to light shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant but also performs well in regularly irrigated landscapes, making it especially useful in Southern California and Los Angeles County landscapes, including coastal gardens, inland valleys, commercial plantings, parkways, and low-water landscapes. Tolerates heat, reflected heat, wind, seasonal drought, and a wide range of environmental conditions.
Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, parkways, containers, pollinator gardens, and low-water landscapes. Useful in Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, commercial landscapes, and fire-wise gardens. Unlike many flowering perennials used in water-wise landscapes, Tulbaghia violacea can maintain flowering for much of the year while requiring only occasional irrigation after establishment, making it particularly valuable for long-season landscape color.
Identification Note: Distinguished by its lavender-purple flower clusters, gray-green garlic-scented foliage, clumping habit, and long bloom season.
Pests and Cultural Considerations: Generally low maintenance, long lived, and relatively pest free. Older clumps may be divided periodically to maintain vigor and encourage flowering. Plants benefit from occasional grooming to remove spent flower stalks and maintain a tidy appearance. Best flowering is achieved in full sun, though plants remain attractive and perform well in light shade.
