Tulbaghia violacea ‘Silver Lace’ is a variegated selection of society garlic derived from the South African species Tulbaghia violacea. This evergreen perennial combines the durability, adaptability, drought tolerance, and extended flowering season of the species with narrow gray-green foliage edged in creamy white. Unlike many flowering perennials that rely primarily on bloom for ornamental value, ‘Silver Lace’ provides year-round landscape interest through its distinctive variegated foliage.

Habit & Size: Forms dense clumps of arching foliage approximately 12–18 inches tall and wide. Leaves are gray-green with narrow creamy white margins that create a bright, textured appearance throughout the year. The intensity and extent of variegation may vary somewhat with season, sun exposure, fertility, and growing conditions. From spring through fall, and often nearly year-round in mild Southern California climates, slender flower stalks rise above the foliage bearing clusters of lavender-purple flowers. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Like other society garlic selections, the foliage emits a garlic-like fragrance when crushed.

Cultural Requirements: Performs best in full sun to light shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types and irrigation regimes. Well suited to Southern California and Los Angeles County landscapes, including coastal gardens, inland valleys, commercial landscapes, parkways, and low-water plantings. The variegated foliage remains highly visible throughout the year and is particularly effective in brightening darker planting areas or creating contrast in mixed plantings. Tolerates heat, reflected heat, wind, seasonal drought, and also performs well in regularly irrigated landscapes.

Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, parkways, containers, pollinator gardens, and water-wise landscapes. Useful in Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, commercial landscapes, and fire-wise gardens. The cream-edged foliage provides strong visual contrast when combined with gray-, blue-, purple-, and dark green-foliaged plants, making it especially useful for adding texture, brightness, and year-round interest to water-wise landscape designs.

Identification Note: Distinguished from typical society garlic by its narrow creamy white leaf margins and lavender-purple flowers. Unlike Tulbaghia violacea ‘Oro Verde’, which is characterized by chartreuse to golden-yellow variegation, ‘Silver Lace’ displays cool-toned cream and green foliage.

Pests and Cultural Considerations: Generally low maintenance, long lived, and relatively trouble free. Older clumps may be divided periodically to maintain vigor and encourage flowering. Plants benefit from occasional grooming to remove spent flower stalks and older foliage as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Best foliage color and flowering are achieved in full sun, though plants remain attractive and perform well in light shade.
