Tulbaghia violacea ‘Oro Verde’ is a variegated selection of society garlic derived from the South African species Tulbaghia violacea. May be seen in the trade as Tulbaghia violacea ‘Gold Stripe’, this evergreen perennial combines the durability, adaptability, drought tolerance, and extended bloom season of society garlic with distinctive chartreuse to golden-yellow variegation that provides year-round landscape color. The brightly striped foliage is the plant's primary ornamental feature and remains attractive even when plants are not in flower.

Habit & Size: Forms dense clumps of narrow, arching foliage approximately 1–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide. Leaves are prominently variegated with chartreuse to golden-yellow margins surrounding green centers, creating a bright, colorful appearance throughout the year. The intensity and extent of variegation may vary with season, sun exposure, fertility, and growing conditions. Like other society garlic selections, the foliage releases a strong garlic-like fragrance when bruised or during warm weather. Lavender flowers are produced on slender stems rising above the foliage from spring through summer, and often over a longer season in mild Southern California climates. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Cultural Requirements: Performs best in full sun to light shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types and irrigation regimes. Foliage color and variegation are typically most pronounced in full sun, though plants remain attractive in light shade. Well suited to Southern California and Los Angeles County landscapes, including coastal gardens, inland valleys, commercial landscapes, parkways, and low-water plantings. Tolerates heat, reflected heat, wind, seasonal drought, and also performs well in regularly irrigated landscapes.

Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, parkways, containers, pollinator gardens, and water-wise landscapes. Useful in Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, commercial landscapes, and fire-wise gardens. The bright variegated foliage distinguishes this selection from standard society garlic and provides reliable year-round color, making it particularly useful for creating contrast with green-, gray-, blue-, and purple-foliaged plants in mixed plantings.

Identification Note: Distinguished from typical society garlic by its prominent chartreuse to golden-yellow marginal variegation and lavender flowers. It is also listed in the trade under the synonym Tulbaghia violacea ‘Gold Stripe’.

Pests and Cultural Considerations: Generally low maintenance, long lived, and relatively trouble free. Older clumps may be divided periodically to maintain vigor and encourage flowering. Plants benefit from occasional grooming to remove spent flower stalks and maintain a tidy appearance. Best foliage color and flowering are achieved in full sun, though plants remain attractive and perform well in light shade.
