A beautiful, resilient, and useful selection of Verbena lilacina has prolific, purple flowers that cover the compact shrub for much of the year. De la Mina was selected by Carol Bornstein and introduced through the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. The functional, ~ 3’ x 3’ size of the shrub, is perfect for a variety of applications including butterfly gardens. Blooms virtually all year in most temperate areas of southern California and tolerates regular pruning if needed to keep tidy and promote the continuous bloom. Prefers good drainage but will perform in heavier soils as well. Also prefers supplemental irrigation in the summer although it can also tolerate drought conditions (not without showing it). Grows best in full sun but will tolerate partial, filtered shade. Too much shade leads to errant growth and reduced blooming. Due to its basically carefree nature, this selection is a must have for any butterfly, CA native, or drought tolerate landscape. Use as a solitary plant or in mass for a spectacular effect.
