Tulbaghia violacea ‘Blanca’ is a white-flowering selection of society garlic derived from the South African species Tulbaghia violacea. This evergreen perennial retains the durability, adaptability, drought tolerance, and extended bloom season of the species while offering bright white flowers that provide strong contrast in the landscape compared to traditional purple-flowered selections.

Habit & Size: Forms dense clumps of narrow, gray-green, grass-like foliage approximately 12–18 inches tall and wide. The foliage emits a garlic-like fragrance when crushed. From spring through fall, and often nearly year-round in mild Southern California climates, plants produce clusters of bright white flowers held above the foliage on slender stems reaching 18–24 inches tall. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Cultural Requirements: Performs best in full sun to light shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types and irrigation regimes. Once established, plants are highly drought tolerant yet remain attractive and floriferous under regular irrigation. Well suited to Southern California and Los Angeles County landscapes, including coastal gardens, inland valleys, commercial plantings, parkways, and low-water landscapes. Tolerates heat, reflected heat, wind, and seasonal drought.

Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, parkways, containers, pollinator gardens, and water-wise landscapes. Useful in Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, commercial landscapes, and fire-wise gardens. The bright white flowers provide strong visual contrast in mixed plantings and remain highly visible in evening gardens, shaded locations, and commercial landscapes where clear flower color is desirable throughout a long bloom season.

Identification Note: Distinguished from typical society garlic by its bright white flowers rather than the lavender-purple flowers characteristic of the species.

Pests and Cultural Considerations: Generally low maintenance, long lived, and relatively trouble free. Older clumps may be divided periodically to maintain vigor and encourage flowering. Plants benefit from occasional grooming to remove spent flower stalks and maintain a tidy appearance. Best flowering is achieved in full sun, though plants remain attractive and perform well in light shade.
