Tulbaghia violacea ‘Emerisa White’ is a white-flowering selection of society garlic discovered by Emerisa Gardens in Santa Rosa, California from a population of standard purple-flowered Tulbaghia violacea. Native to South Africa through its parent species, this evergreen perennial combines the durability, drought tolerance, and extended bloom period of society garlic with soft white flowers flushed pink, providing a useful alternative to traditional purple-flowered selections. Habit & Size: Forms dense clumps of flexible, gray-green, grass-like foliage approximately 1–2 feet tall and wide. From spring through fall, and often nearly year-round in frost-free Southern California gardens, slender flower stalks rise above the foliage bearing umbels of 10–20 white flowers with a light pink blush. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Like the species, the foliage emits a distinct garlic fragrance when bruised or during warm weather. Cultural Requirements: Performs best in full sun to light shade and adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils. Like most Tulbaghia, 'Emerisa White' is tolerant of a wide range of irrigation regimes from infrequent to regular. Well suited to Southern California landscapes, including coastal gardens, inland valleys, commercial landscapes, and low-water plantings. Tolerant of heat, coastal conditions, and a wide range of environmental conditions. Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, parkways, containers, pollinator gardens, and low-water landscapes. Useful in Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, commercial landscapes, and fire-wise gardens. The soft white flowers provide contrast in mixed plantings and pair well with California native and other drought-tolerant perennials. Particularly useful where a white-flowering, long-blooming perennial is desired for low-water landscapes. The garlic-scented foliage is often less attractive to deer than many commonly used ornamental perennials. Identification Note: Distinguished from typical society garlic by its white flowers with a subtle pink blush rather than the lavender-purple flowers characteristic of the species. Pests and Cultural Considerations: Generally low maintenance and relatively pest free. Mealybugs may occasionally occur, particularly in container production or densely planted nursery settings. Aphids, snails, and slugs may occasionally be encountered on new growth. Crown and root rot can develop in poorly drained soils or where irrigation is excessive, particularly during cooler months. Best performance is achieved in well-drained soils with moderate to occasional irrigation after establishment. Remove spent flower stalks as needed to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continued flowering.
