Heuchera

The genus Heuchera, also known as Alum-root, is a member of the Saxifrage Family (Saxifragaceae). This perennial herb occurs naturally at high altitudes between 5,000 and 11,000 feet growing in rock crevices or on rocky slopes usually in partial shade. Although many Heuchera can be found at the higher elevations, Heuchera maxima as well as many of the Heuchera species grown at El Nativo Growers grow very well at lower elevations and can even be found naturally in southern California and on the Channel Islands. In recent years, many new interesting hybrids have been developed and introduced into the market. As a result Heuchera are now used widely in ornamental landscaping. Heuchera maxima and maxima types prefer dry shady conditions and thrive under oak trees. Many of the other hybrids prefer regular watering and care.

REQUIREMENTS: Zones vary by species as do sun and watering requirements; however, most Heuchera perform well in both sun and shade as long as the soil is well drained and holds little moisture. The shade of most trees provides the ideal growing environment satisfying both sun and soil requirements.
